Admission Assessment Program
The Admission and Assessment Program is a 31 bed acute care psychiatric program that functions in a manner similar to a general hospital mental health program. The Program is divided into two separate components:
- An extra care area of four beds, where acutely distressed psychiatric patients are admitted for more intense observation and assessment; and
- An assessment area of 27 beds, utilizing a interprofessional team approach to assess and offer short-term treatment of acute mental health problems.
The overall approach is a patient-centered care. However, the main emphasis is on psychopharmacology as most patients admitted to this program are usually acutely psychotic or severely distressed.
The team offers a variety of therapeutic groups for patients as well as individual and family support. Patients are expected to be active participants with the development of their own plan of care. The interprofessional team assists with goal setting, self-evaluation/ assessment in determining obtainable goals and discharge plans.
The patient's identified community supports including family are invited to participate in the treatment and discharge planning by attending meetings either in person or by telephone. Discharge planning is initiated upon admission with an emphasis is on returning the patient to his/her home community as soon as possible with adequate follow-up.
