Regional Forensic Services Program

Services offered:
As an integrated component of the Ministry of Health's coordinated Provincial Forensic Network, the Regional Forensic Services Program (RFSP) is designated to serve those persons who suffer from a mental disorder and who have come into conflict with the law.

Patients are referred from both the federal and provincial criminal justice systems within the catchment area of the Mental Health Centre.  This 20 bed co-ed program provides inpatient and outpatient forensic assessment, treatment, rehabilitative and outreach programs as well as triage and Court diversion functions at the Provincial Courts in Simcoe and Muskoka counties.

Referral Process:
Patients referred to the RFSP will be those who have been assessed and/or ordered, in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada, to attend this program for the provision of servcies as designated by a Judge or the Ontario Review Board.  Patients will not present a risk to the community greater than that which can be reasonable managed within the designated security provisions of this program.

As part of the system of regional coordination of provincial forensic beds, the RFSP will act as the initial contact source in the Mental Health Centre service area for access to beds that provide the required treatment and security provision.

On Discharge:
Patients who have been admitted to the RFSP for a court-ordered assessment are discharged back to the court or to a correctional facility to await a court procedure.  Patients who have been found "Not Criminally Responsible" or "Unfit to Stand Trial Due to a Mental Disorder" are reintegrated into the community following treatment and when it is determined by the Ontario Review Board that the risk to public safety is sufficiently reduced.  Community treatment of discharged patients is coordinated by Forensic case managers with assistance from our partners in the community mental health system.
