Penetanguishene Researchers Release New Book about Domestic Violence

Drs. Zoe Hilton, Grant Harris, and Marnie Rice (Researchers at the Penetanguishene Mental Health Centre) have published a new book describing their scientific research on domestically violent men. The book is a complete manual for a risk assessment system that can be used by police, criminal justiceofficials, clinicians, and abused women themselves. Hilton and her colleagues believe that public policies mandating the use of this system can reduce the number of assaults on women.

The authors collaborated with the Ontario Provincial Police to conduct the research described in the book.

The risk assessment system entails two related tools: the Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment (ODARA) and the Domestic Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (DVRAG). The ODARA has been adopted by police and probation services across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and several U.S. states,as well as shelters and child protection agencies in Ontario.

The book, published by the American Psychological Association, is available in August, 2009.
